The Tree House

One of the most satisfying projects we have undertaken at the Lodge has been the rejuvenation of this old building ... now affectionately known as the "tree house". We aren't really sure what its original purpose was, but we are told that at one point fishing guides used it as overnight accommodations between their bookings. The foundation may have also supported a water tank to provide water to the Lodge during the dry summer months.

Whatever its history, it required allot of attention to make it habitable. The project began when Abby decided she wanted to move staff members out of the main Lodge and into separate living quarters. She put me to task explaining the she wanted it done "now" and with little or no resources being expended. Well, neither of those things happened.

The project started in late June 2007 with demolition of the existing stairs and deck and the gutting of the inside to the studs. The roof was extended, new interior walls built. wiring installed, and a new deck, stairs and railings were added. After insulating the walls and doing the rough-in plumbing, tongue and groove pine was installed on the walls and ceilings. Next we white washed the walls and painted the ceilings.

2008 brought with it renewed orders from the "boss" to get it finished. So the floors and trim were installed and the electrical service and lighting completed; the tile shower was completed; some of the old furniture was re-upholstered and refinished; drapes, duvets and pillows were made. We were busy with guests and other projects as well so completion of the "Tree House" was delayed for another year.

By now Abby could see that the "Tree House" had become much more than staff housing. With its spectacular view and wonderful "feel" it was destined to be a favorite spot for guests to spend their holiday. As an incentive to get it finished we put it on the web site and booking engine early in 2009. Almost immediately we had a couple of groups scheduled to stay there.

Consequently, I went to the Lodge at the end of March and began the process of finishing the project. I had brought with me the sink and toilet along with a Bosch "on demand" water heater. Of course, their installation necessitated bringing water and sewer from the Lodge to the Cabin ... just another challenge along the way. Thank goodness Abby finally arrived. We were able to get the drapes hung, the furniture purchased and arranged and the entire place prepared for its initial guests.

To say the least ... they loved it!

We think you will too. Just remember, if you want to stay in the "Tree House" there are 59 stair steps to maneuver each way.

Wild Water

Life on the water in the pacific northwest can be dangerous ... especially in the winter when the winds blow ferociously. Truly nasty sea conditions occur when the wind and the current (tide) are moving in opposite directions. Large swells, rough chop, and heavy sea spray make boating unpleasant at a minimum.

The rough water takes its toll on docks, ramps, piers and other structures. Over the years, our dock has suffered its share of damage from the water and the weather. Lost floats, broken planks, and missing fender boards are fairly common occurrences.

This fall the weather has been unusually bad in the Inland Passage. Rain and heavy wind have been commonplace. Furthermore, We understand that there was recently an earthquake south of the Charlotte's which generated unusually high tides.

What does that mean for the condition of the dock and ramp at the Lodge?

Suffice it to say that it can't be good. In fact, if it were not for the quick action of good friends and neighbor's, the ramp would have either been lost or severely damaged.

A very special "Thank You" to Judith for making us aware of the problem and to Clarke and Jen Leggett for their skill, strength and bravery in putting the ramp back in place.

Getting started

We have been talking about putting up a blog for the Lodge for quite some time. It seems that there have always been other projects that have taken precedence over getting it up and maintaining it, but we are committed to posting regularly.

Lest I forget to mention it in future posts, "Thank You" to all of our vendor partners, staff members, neighbors, and friends who have helped make Rendezvous Lodge the wonderful place that it is. Without your help, we couldn't have made it work.

It goes without saying that we have thoroughly enjoyed all the people who have come to Rendezvous Lodge as guests and left as friends and family. We are so glad you found the Lodge and hope you will be able to come back soon.
